The Scientific Power of Meditation

For thousands of years people have practiced
meditation for spiritual, emotional, and physical well being. But from a scientific perspective,
how exactly does meditating affect your body? Does it really do anything? It all starts in the brain! During meditation,
brain-scans see increased activity in regions directly correlated with decreased anxiety
and depression, along with increased pain tolerance. The Default Mode Network, in particular,
is activated when one’s mind is at rest and not focusing on the outside world, and
has been found to improve memory, self awareness and goal setting. Want to be more caring to
your friends and family? When scientists compared the brains of Buddhist monks to new meditators,
they found the region of the brain associated with empathy to be much more pronounced in
the monks. It also literally changes your brain waves – and we can measure these frequencies.
Meditators have higher levels of Alpha waves, which have been shown to reduce feelings of
negative mood, tension, sadness and anger. And if that wasn’t enough, it also physically
changes our brain shape and size. Studies found that after 8 weeks of a meditation program,
gray matter was more dense in areas associated with learning, memory processing, and emotion
regulation. And yet the amygdala, which deals with stress, blood pressure and fear, had
decreased gray matter! When we look at the entire body, not only
do we see decreased blood pressure, but it can also increase the variability of your
heart rate. While this may sound harmful, it actually plays a critical role in properly
transporting Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide throughout your body. Think your getting sick? In a study
where both meditators and non-mediators were given the flu virus, meditators were able
to produce a greater number of antibodies and had increased immune function. If we go a little deeper, we can even see
changes on a cellular level. Your chromosomes have protective protein complexes called telomeres,
which help reduce damage to your DNA and lower cell death. And a shortened telomere length
has been linked to several disease such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s
and cancer. Amazingly, when cancer survivors completed a meditation program, their bodies
showed significant increases in telomere length. It’s believed that psychological intervention,
particularly decreasing stress, has a direct effect on the enzyme telomerase, which has
been shown to counteract shortening by adding DNA to the shrinking telomeres. Of course, meditation is not a substitute
for other medical advice or a healthy lifestyle – we don’t want you leaving this video thinking
it will cure cancer. But much like hitting the gym can grow your muscles and increase
your overall health, it seems that meditation may be a way of ‘working out’ your brain
with extra health benefits. And since your brain controls, well…all of you, why not

  1. Meditation sometimes also makes you feel happy with what you have which is great, but it depends on your point of view, if you wanna achieve something badly, it may not be great to meditate in a self-loving and happiness meditation because it might kill your urge to achieve that thing.

Hey English people.Meditation in english doesn't mean anything you might have just mastered the art of sleeping in vertical posture.The real word from sanksrit is Dhyan.Which means that you and your body and mind is not you.Your mind is just memory which you've gathered over a period of time and body is just earth(food)So Meditation(dhyan) means that there is a distance between what is you and your body.These western people are teaching non sense.They have ruined all the concepts of Yoga.

    I highly suggest you try it if you have anxiety, depression, ocd, whatever mental health disorder you have.

  4. If a person gets to the point where they much prefer the " silence " instead of the troublesome thoughts . Then it becomes much easier to keep Holding the Attention on the silent intervals Between Each Thought, until they grow longer, and then become fixed as your natural ground state. Then everyday life becomes much Lighter .peace 🎼🎧🎼👌

  6. I did not do meditation at the time (and still don’t meditate at the time of this comment. But I may try sometime when I find out how) but I somehow managed to walk on a broken toe for 4 days before my parents knew my toe was broken. (I broke it by trying to shut a bathroom door and my toe got caught.) I still have no idea how I managed to do that. Good pain tolerance still, but not that much as I did at that time

  9. The brain doesn't control all of you. That is old Science. The gut and the heart play a significant role in how your brain functions. It's not a one way street (brain to body).

  10. meditation is helping me a lot. I did it daily for just 1 week and I can already see the difference. I thought it would just make me a bit more chill and calm but really it was more than that, I procrastinate so much less than before, I'm able to sleep early, wake up early, more focused, I'm able to handle things that used to annoy me, I got more in control of myself, able to resist some urges, I became more productive, I'm in a good state of mind unlike before too. It really affects the overall mood I'd say we should meditate everyday, not just once in awhile

  11. it really helps when in college – an extremely stressful environment. I'm in my last semester in an engineering program and without any stress relief I feel absolutely miserable. Mediation works wonders. I highly recommend it to anyone that is feeling overwhelmed by work and deadlines.

    You won't notice u've already been selling your soul to demons. Meditation is a trap and it lures you to do that activity for relaxation instead of praying to God. Satan has his own ways to draw you into an activity that will pull you away from jesus and meditation is simply focused in 'self consciousness' and being connected to 'nature'. You're then clearly worshipping the "creations" not the "creator". Those who find fault in their living and suffer negativities in their surroundings do not need meditation, they need more on christ. Another fact is that meditation is also the first step before practicing witchcrafts, you enhance your spiritual powers through feeding your higher self consciousness, you're tainting your souls without you knowing. You don't even know that chantings like 'AUM' or 'OM' is pleasing entities..

    One last fact: King Solomon sold his soul to the devils, he was so full on knowledge that his spiritual self already got devoured. He contacted demons including the higher ones summoning 72. Do your research.

  19. Meditation and basic yoga is taught in Indian rss school before the subject periods.
    It help a lot for high grade students.

  20. Is it healthy to meditate for long hours at a time tho, like hours at a time. Why am I getting the gist that too much can damage the brain. Boredom should be there for a reason.

  21. There is another dimension you can access through meditation. The same one you can access through psychedelics. I haven't learned how to master meditation, but I'll get there one day!

  22. Namaaz', (Muslim prayer) is also a type of meditation, the whole point of Namaz is to centre one self in worship of the Supreme Being, there fore it to requires the same practical steps as one would require in the act of meditation.
    When Namaz is performed slow and purposefully it shows the same affect on the human mind as those observed by those practising meditation.

  25. Om, in Hinduism and other religions chiefly of India, a sacred syllable that is considered to be the greatest of all the mantras, or sacred formulas.
    it is the most powerful mantra to use in your meditation. OM contains the basic sounds corresponding to the three standard states of consciousness: waking, dreaming, and deep sleep.

  29. This is the VERY FIRST TIME “from a scientific level” that someone has said Telomeres can actually lengthen with any kind of treatment. I have read and heard continually that once they shrink as we get older and some faster than others due to stress, and other factors that, this was non reversible. It’s our DNA Copy center of our cells.

  30. 1:50 You cannot “regrow” your telomeres. They have an excess of length and is what makes you age as they get shorter. This is why I unsubscribed and you should too!
