Spiritual Disciplines | Spiritual Quest | EP 10 | Spirituality 101 | KrsnaKnows

We are doing a series on Spiritual Quest! Today the topic is called “Spiritual Discipline.” Discipline is a topic that we have been covering
throughout our life. It’s a topic which we have woken up to the
day, from our mothers, parents, teachers, guidance counselors – everybody discusses
about discipline. Why should it not be taken up in our subject
of Spirituality, called “Spiritual Discipline?” Spiritual discipline is a wide range of subject,
but we are just tackling discipline which will take you towards Spiritual. If you were to join the Army or the Defense
Forces, even in the different forces it is very important that you undergo a training
where discipline is a primary motivator. You have to start your day early in the morning. You have to listen to the commands of your
officer. You are supposed to do your duty, whatever
job that has been delegated to you. Very clearly you have to follow the instructions
and deliver the topic. Your day should start very early, somewhere
at 3:30 or 4 a.m. in the morning. It is called the Brahma muhurta. What is so important about the Brahma muhurta? Remember your body has taken a deep sleep
during the night, rejuvenation of the cells has happened, new cells are ready for the
day, your old cells have been discarded. Likewise, the Earth has also woken up to a
new day. Something that is in the air is called Prana. Prana is life forces. They are very active at the beginning of the
day. It is also called the twilight zone. Now during this twilight, when you wake up
the pranic energy which you are sucking inwards with your nose is very very healthy. It is going to reach into you further. It is going to take over the entire day. So, if you have to ask this question, “why
is this energy required?” Are you not charging your cell phones at the
beginning of the day so that the charge lasts the entire day? You have to connect with your inner being
at the beginning of the day. This exercise is called mediation. When you meditate on the inner being or any
subject you are actually connected. This connection establishes your day. It is going to take you further and further. The body is getting charged, the cells are
getting rejuvenated. They are getting fully ready for the day. So, mediation is the first activity which
I would recommend for you. And this activity has to be very clearly timed
out. Which means if you are doing your meditation
at 4 am in the morning you can do for the next 30 or 40 minutes. The next is called exercise. If you are used to going for a walk early
in the morning, please go for a walk. And if you are a member of any gym, please
join the gym. If you do yoga in the morning, please go ahead
with your yogic activity. Breathing is an important phenomenon that
happens during the day. So breathing exercises are a must. This breathing exercise is called Pranayama. You are getting your cells charged for the
entire day. Just like the lithium battery that you have
in your phone. You are charging the battery. When you go for your walk or your gym or for
yoga classes, can you see that you toning up your body, your brains, your muscle and
every other thing that is there? It is also helping your inner being because
you are disciplined. Before you start your gym don’t you do something
which is called as a warmup exercise? Even for yoga you have to do a warmup exercise. Never ever give a reason for not attending
your classes. Don’t say that I did not have the time to
go to the gym. It has to be as regular as it can be. You better be regular. Don’t say, “I need a holiday.” If you are thinking that holiday is required,
you decide in the beginning, that Sunday is my off or some such day in your life. If you feel that you have to become disciplined
in your approach, then you better have a timeline for everything. If you are going to the gym for 45 minutes
or 1 hour, please do that. If you are doing the treadmill, do that. if you are doing the weights, do that. Whatever that is necessary, do it. But, do it in a disciplined manner. If you have a trainer use the trainer properly. He knows better things about which way to
use, or which muscle of yours needs toning up. In the same way in a yoga class, the yoga
teacher will tell you exactly what you are supposed to do. Never miss a class. And please, don’t give any reasons for missing
it because it is important that you become disciplined. Now we are moving further. As we move further from your exercise and
your daily routine we are going towards the breakfast table. Now in the breakfast table, never skip a breakfast. Imagine, you have kept your body without food
for 12 whole hours. The last meal of the day was at 7 pm and it
is 7 am in the morning. Don’t you think it is important that you need
to feed your body? Yes, you have fed your brain, you have fed
your mind, you have body some exercise, but not your stomach. You need to give proper food. If there is a beverage involved like chai,
coffee please have that. It is not important how much quantity or what
you’re going to eat, maintain the quantity. Maintain as much as possible whatever you
can eat, doesn’t mean you have to overeat. Something done in moderation. Once you have finished your breakfast, which
is also a timed out activity, if you start your breakfast at 7 please finish it by 7:30. Then the next thing for you to do is get up,
take a bath, get dressed properly. Now when I say get dressed properly, it means
you are wearing a dress which is suitable for the occasion. If you have to wear a coat, please wear a
coat. If you have to go in casuals, go in casuals. Just imagine, if you are wearing a garment
which has a stain on it, your entire day will be spoiled it is because you are going to
think, “I have a stain on my shirt.” Why would you want to wear such kind of garments? Wear clean neat garments which are ironed. Once you get to work, whichever form of transport
that you are getting in, let us say you are using your car just keep yourself cool in
the car. It is important to be cool. You know how the traffic is nowadays, maintain
road discipline so when you get to work, get in time. Don’t give reasons again over there, that
you know, “I had some problems on the road, or my bus didn’t go in time, or my train was
late.” It’s not that the train was late, you are
late. You are not supposed to be late. See, that is called discipline. People who give reasons are the cause of indiscipline
in this world, remember this. If you are becoming indisciplined, what is
it that you will be doing with your own children? You are not supposed to give this kind of
an indisciplined attitude towards yourself because you are going to teach someone else
in the future. So you better be disciplined because if you
expect your child to reach in time, for the bus or for the school, if you are not disciplined,
how are you going to teach your child? So become disciplined in your approach over
there as well. Once you are in your office attend to your
office work diligently. In office itself, you have to assure yourself
that your diary has been written for the day. Your appointments are kept in time. You have ensured that everything is spic and
span. That means that you have brought your laptop
properly, your phone is charged, everything that you need, the tools of the trade are
with you. It is again a disciplined approach. Imagine you have left your phone behind at
home. Do you know how much of your entire day is
going to get wasted just because you do not have some number which you wanted at that
point in time? You may be calling up some relatives at home,
saying, “Can you please give me that number?” Then you have to give your password, remember
that. Why would you want to give your password to
somebody else? So it is important that you carry your phone
with you. You carry everything that you need. Your diary is written, your calendar is up
to date. When you are working with your colleagues,
be diligent in your work. Again, if you are taking a break just assure
yourself that that break is only called a break, not a breakdown. You understand? It means that if you are going for a lunch,
your lunch is a very important part of the day, ust like your breakfast. Now, when you’re having your lunch just see
to it that it’s a balanced meal. If you have got into some new-fangled diet
of yours, have you consulted someone who has the knowledge about it? Don’t get into diets without consulting your
own body. Remember your body is the biggest doctor that
you have. This body of yours is going to tell you what
you need and what you don’t need. Your lunch has to be again a disciplined kind
of a lunch. Once you finish your meal, wrap up your things
and go back to your desk or whatever you are doing, just see to it that you got over the
lunch. Otherwise, you are going to feel hungry once
again. Your lunch has to be a complete meal. Then we come to the end of the day. When you have come to the end of the day,
just write down whatever that you have done so that you don’t miss out on anything. If you have to send your mails out that day,
please send them out. If you have to connect with someone, please
connect with that person. If your calendar has to be written, please
write it down. Why do you want to carry your workload home? Is it not important that you leave your workload
in the office itself? This is another disciplined approach that
you need to take. Once you are back home, or once you are traveling
back by train maybe you get an hour or an hour and a half in the train itself, it is
your “me” time. Or if you have got back home, go back to your
room, take a break. Spend that time with yourself. It’s a “me” time. “Me” time is a time that you spend with yourself. Whatever that you wish to do. Whether you love to write or whether you love
to read or you see some movies, watch some serials do that for yourself. It is called relaxation. A relaxation is a very important part of your
day. Remember you have been straining right from
the morning till the evening and it’s time that you need to relax a little bit. This relaxation is a time when the Earth also relaxes
it is called the twilight. During the twilight, when the day has ended
and the night has begun this particular zone is called the twilight. And during the twilight the body, the Earth
is going into a shutdown mode. Now when the body is going into the shutdown
mode, just like when you left the office, exactly the way your body is going to do. It is going to take stock of the day. It is going to say, “This particular cell
needs repair.” “This particular part of the body needs a
certain amount of rest.” There are certain parts of your body that
need to be exercised, do that. Maybe your brain needs a little exercise. So why don’t you watch something and then
relax it as well? This is the day which you have spent, remember
the energy that you have gathered during the course of the day, the beginning of the day,
you are using it throughout. Evening time is another time where you can
then start your shutdown mode. Which means again that you have to close down
for the day. You have to get ready for sleeping, just assure
yourself again that you are not going to watch some movie or some serial or something which
is going to keep you awake. You know it happens so often, isn’t it? You know how if you have been watching some
kind of a crappy serial, that serial is going to play in your brain constantly like a dream. You don’t want that to happen. You need a peaceful sleep. So your shutdown has to be perfect. Now, all that I have said is called a disciplined
approach towards life. In Spiritual matters, discipline is necessary. Now I said the word discipline, now Spiritual
Discipline is another subject. We call it Yamas and Niyamas and so on and
so forth. Now this Yamas and Niyamas are very important
activities which have to be done and there are some that should not be done. Now, these are an important part of Spiritual
development. The next time that we open up the subject
matter we are going to do the Yamas and the Niyamas. These are important topics and they will help
you in your Spiritual Development. I will now end this video over here, but before
I end let me tell you that if you have any questions do write into us or write in the
comments section below so that we will be able to then develope another subject for
our next shoot. Thank you
