Meet Sylvia Lucas, M.D., Ph.D., Neurology/Neurosurgery Care Provider | UW Medicine

SYLVIA MARIE LUCAS: I love
the University of Washington. I’m a local girl. I went to high school here. I went to college here. I got a PhD here. I went to medical
school here, and this is my way of giving
back to the university, to come here and start
a headache clinic. I’ve always been interested
in issues that affect women. I think I got interested
in headache in the years before there was any
effective therapy, and it was thought to be a
neurotic condition of women. And so now that we know the
biology of it and the fact that it is a brain
disease, it has become much more
interesting, as has the therapy that’s been
developed to treat headaches. One of my favorite patients
I met about 10 years ago. She at that time was
a high school student and very involved in soccer. She was on her third
concussion, the last one where she hit the turf with
a brief loss of consciousness and had developed
post-traumatic headaches. Headache is the most common
symptom after any concussion or mild traumatic brain injury. This woman was very inspiring. Not only did she
finished high school and went to finish
college, but she also went to graduate school to study
the sociology of head injuries and how they affect people. I have enough degrees, but,
you know, I really like dogs. And so maybe vet school is next. I don’t know.
